IED explodes, kills Shabaab terrorist in Elwak

AL-SHABAAB-EXPLOSIVESNAIROBI, Kenya, Dec 26 – An Al Shabaab terrorist was killed and several wounded Saturday after an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) they were mounting on the road exploded on them at Dabasiti area near Elwak, police said.

The incident occurred as they were escaping from the police who had intercepted them.

A manhunt is currently underway for the gang that escaped and Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet explained that everything is being done to ensure no such incidents takes place.

“Our officers are pursuing the rest who escaped after one of the terrorists was killed by an IED they were mounting on the road exploded,” Boinnet said on telephone.

“They were escaping as police pursued them on foot,” he further stated. “Police officers had been tipped off by the public about their presence there.”

Security patrols have been intensified in major cities and at the border points close to Somalia after Boinnet warned that terror threats in the country were real following the split of Al Shabaab into two–one group supporting ISIS and the other Al Qaeda.

“We should not drop our guard at all, it is not time to relax because these two groups are struggling to outshine one another,” he told Capital FM News and urged the public to remain vigilant during the festive season and beyond.

Boinnet stated that nothing will be left to chance especially during this festive season as security has been beefed up in all parts of the country.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery also visited Lamu on Saturday to look at the measures that have been put in place to ensure no criminal activity takes place.
