NAIROBI, Kenya, Dec 23 – House Speakers Justin Muturi and Ekwee Ethuro have issued writs declaring the Malindi Constituency parliamentary seat and the Kericho County Senate seat vacant.

In a special gazette notice, the Speakers cleared the way for the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to declare a date for the by-elections.

The Kericho County Senate seat fell vacant after Charles Keter resigned following his appointment to the Energy and Petroleum docket in the Cabinet.

Dan Kazungu quit his Malindi parliamentary seat after he was appointed to the Mining docket.

The law says unless there is a court order in place, the by-elections must be conducted within three months of the occurrence of the vacancy.

The two elections are expected to be held on the same day early next year.
