NAIROBI, Kenya, Dec 19 – Former Nairobi Mayor and one-time Makadara Member of Parliament Dick Wathika is dead.

Wathika passed away on Saturday night at the Karen Hospital according to people close to him.

It’s understood that Wathika fell ill and checked himself into hospital where he died.

He was elected Nairobi Mayor in July 2004, and was re-elected in 2006.

Wathika also served as Makadara MP in 2007 to 2010 before his election was nullified.

Other than vying for the Makadara parliamentary seat, he was also the 2013 main challenger for his relative, the current Mukurweini legislator Kabanda wa Kabando.

He also served the country as a Public works Assistant Minister.

Various leaders have mourned him.

“Rest in Peace my friend-relative-competitor-colleague Hon Dickson Wathika, former City Mayor & Assistant Minister Public Works… Indeed Death is very cruel. We’re now taking body to Lee Funeral. Let’s pray for Mama Ciku, children, family Peace,” Kabando posted on his Facebook page.

Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko on his part said he was saddened by the news of Wathika’s death.

“On behalf of my family, the people of Nairobi and on my own behalf, our thoughts and prayers are with your family. I have known Dick for years dating back to his tenure as Makadara MP, “he said.

“He was also the MC during my late dad’s funeral ceremony. My family takes this early opportunity to send our condolences. May the God give his family strength and courage during this difficult moment…May he rest in peace in Jesus name.”

His last public appearance was during the burial of Senator Sonko’s father.
