NAIROBI, Kenya Dec 29 – Three suspected gangsters were shot dead in Nairobi’s Dandora on Tuesday morning as police intensified security ahead of New Year celebrations, police said.

Those killed are said to have been burglars who had tried to enter a house before residents raised an alarm.

Nairobi police chief Japheth Koome has assured that there are adequate security patrols across the city to maintain security throughout the festive season.

“We are get very good cooperation from the public and we are urging them to continue that way as they prepare to welcome the New Year,” Koome told Capital FM News on telephone.

Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet has also urged the public across the country to cooperate with police in maintaining security, while warning against the use of fireworks without authority.

“We wish to advise that no one is allowed to set off any manner of fireworks without the necessary authorization from the Ministry of Mining that will in turn alert the nearest Police Station or Camp,” Boinnet said in a statement issued on Monday night.

Fireworks are usually set off by hotels, individuals as well as other organizations to signify the beginning of the New Year as part of the celebrations.

But Boinnet now says it is necessary for authorities to know where to expect celebratory fireworks because of the current security situation in the country.

“This is particularly important in view of the elevated threat of terrorism and therefore, security officers need to know when and where to expect celebratory fireworks,” the police chief explained.

Kenyans have also been reminded to be fully conscious of their surrounding and to alert the police using the toll free number 999/111 in case of anything that is out of the ordinary is noted.
