NAIROBI, Kenya, Dec 18 – Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero has requested for an update of the various cases facing county staff from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC).

In a letter to EACC Chief Executive Officer Halakhe Waqo, the Nairobi Governor explained that the report will enable him take action on all culpable officials.
He indicated that some of the cases are more than 10 years old and range from extortion, bribe taking, soliciting and impersonation.

“Forwarded please find a list of malpractices cases received from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission. The purpose of this letter is to request for the status report on the same to enable the county take appropriate action,” he stated.

The letter follow reports that some of the county officials are still enjoying their benefits despite the cases pending in court.

One of the cases goes back to 2010 and involved a licensing officer who solicited a bribe of Sh2,000 from anti-corruption officials to license an imaginary bar in Umoja.

“They met him and after negotiations, he agreed to facilitate the processing of the license for a bribe of sh2,000. He was given Sh8,200 so as to process the license and a bribe of Sh2,000 was to be handed over after delivery,” a statement from the EACC pointed out.

In another instance, a county official arrested an undercover agent for allegedly smoking outside the smoking zone at Uhuru Park and demanded a bribe after which he was released.

“He locked him up in a cell behind the Dias and demanded for a bribe of Sh2,000 so as to release him. He however reduced the amount to sh400 which he received and thereafter he was arrested,” the statement explained.

Another case was cited in which an official arrested a member of the public and frog marched him to an ATM machine where he withdrew money and paid him to procure his release.

Two ward officers were also arrested in October this year while pretending to be car park attendants and soliciting bribes from members of the public.
