Police raided a hotel in Embu town said to be the suspects’ operation base, and arrested six disabled persons aged between 20-25 years, the group’s organiser and two men whose work is to push two severely disabled persons.
Embu West police chief Francis Sang said they also seized several begging bowls and Sh3,844 mainly in coins.
He said they were acting on a tip-off from members of the public who reported the group’s routine, where they would be picked and dropped by a taxi each morning and evening.
Sang said the group would be placed in strategic points around the town’s streets.
He said the suspects had confessed to being used by the man, whose wife is also disabled, to collect money and later hand it over.
He revealed that some said they used to collect more money, especially during sunny days, but stated that business was low during rainy days.
Sang said the man they believed is their organiser is from Tanzania and had proper documents to prove it.
He said they would be arraigned in court and charged once investigations are complete.
Sang urged residents to report to police strangers they find suspicious since some could even be having sinister motives.
