MACHAKOS, Kenya, Nov 3 – Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua has voluntarily provided his bank account details, record of assets and wealth for use by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) and other relevant bodies as part of his campaign to clean up the Machakos County Government.

Mutua has also written to the EACC requesting a lifestyle audit for all Machakos Government staff to identify any unexplained wealth.

He has also asked Deputy Governor Bernard Kiala, Ministers Chief Officers, directors their deputies and all senior government officers to follow his example and allow the EACC to scrutinise their wealth.

“I do believe that those who have nothing to hide will have no problem declaring what they have and how they acquired it,” he said.

Already, Governor Mutua has suspended two ministers and several county government officials in a corruption purge.

“If you can’t handle the heat, move away from Machakos County. Our citizens will receive their services without thieves gobbling their money,” warned Mutua.

Addressing a news conference outside his office, Mutua said he wants the message to be clear that Machakos will not allow fraudsters to operate in the county because that will slow down development of his county residents.

“It is very common in Kenya and other poor countries suffering from corruption for government officers to suddenly amass unexplained wealth due to corruption. I am committed to weed out all corrupt officers, “he said.

Mutua also appointed career public servant and former State House Comptroller Hyslop Ipu as the Machakos anti-corruption advisor to help root out corrupt elements and to set up transparency structures.

“Ipu understands how governments work and is committed to the fight against corruption,” said Mutua.

He said that in order to strengthen structures and establish a government system that will last for decades, he appointed former Secretary to the Public Service Board Bernadette Nzioka as his advisor on Human Resources and Labour issues.

Mutua also appointed former Permanent Secretary Sammy Mbova to advise on the organisation of government and mitigation factors required to ensure efficiency and effective service delivery.

Mutua challenged members of the public who have given bribes for services to be offered to supply the information for necessary action.

He said he was committed to transforming Machakos to be the epitome of transparency and accountability in Kenya.

“That is the spirit of Maendeleo Chap Chap. It is all about giving Mwananchi his or her rights and the development they deserve,” said Mutua.

He added that for Machakos and Kenya to develop, citizens must defeat the scourge of corruption that has denied the public realisation of their dreams.
