They accused the government of neglecting construction of the route.
“We want to request the government to help us in mending this road. This is a national road and it should be smooth. If this is not done, then we will do so ourselves. The state of this road is pathetic and you cannot even drive at a speed of 40 or 50 km/hr,” he stated.
The protestors mainly matatu operators said they are unable to work since most of the vehicles break down as a result of the poor state of the road.
Charles Okana, chairman of matatu operators in the area, stated that time was wasted on the road as motorists try to negotiate the numerous pot holes.
“So we are crying to the government to come to our rescue because even the matatu operators are withdrawing their vehicles from our route because they incur a lot of expenses. Please help us. Where are you Ranguma, where are you Shakeel Shabir,” he stated.
He indicated that many motorists are prone to attacks from thugs in the area due to the bad road.
Okana appealed to the national government to priorities the road and have it tarmacked.
He further asked the political leadership in the County of Kisumu to push the national government to avail funds for the road.
Last year, Muhoroni MP Onyango Koyoo announced that the national government had allocated some funds for the construction of the road.
Koyoo had said that the 36 km road categorised under C-34 was ranked number seven by Kenya Urban Rural Road Authority with procurement progress on final stage.
