MOMBASA, Kenya, Nov 10 – Two senior police officers charged with the murder of a 14 year old girl in Kwale have been put on their defence.

Mombasa High Court judge Martin Muya ruled that there is enough evidence to prosecute Inspector Veronicah Gitahi and Police Constable Issa Mzee who are accused of killing Kweke Mwandaza in Kwale in August last year.

The girl was shot dead during a security operation in which eight officers stormed her family’s home at Mwawewu village in Kinango.

The police had raided the home seeking to arrest her uncle.

The two were charged after orders by Director of Public Prosecutions Keriako Tobiko following separate investigations conducted by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations and the Independent Policing Oversight Authority.

The DCI wanted the matter referred to a public inquest but IPOA recommended murder charges against the two.

Tobiko disregarded the probe by the police and upheld the one by the oversight authority
