NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 5 – Machakos Deputy Governor Bernard Kiala is in trouble with the police after a car assigned to him was impounded by the Traffic Police Check Unit in Nairobi for serious criminal and traffic offenses.

The vehicle is currently at Embakasi police station, where the Deputy Governor has been summoned to record a statement.

He is yet to honour the summons.

The Subaru Outback official plates had been removed and replaced with civilian plates.

According to police, the offence may attract charges since it means two cars were operating with similar number plates on Kenyan roads.

Police are yet to determine the motive or the activities the vehicle was engaged in that necessitated the removal of its registered number plates.

In his defence, the Deputy Governor was quoted saying the replacement was necessary on security grounds.

“Changing number plates is a common practice in government for security reasons,” he was quoted saying.

The troubled Deputy Governor at one time claimed that his official car had been taken from him and that he was using matatus.
