NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 28 – Malindi MP Dan Kazungu could not contain his excitement as we met up with him at a Nairobi hotel for an interview following his nomination as Cabinet Secretary to the ‘prestigious’ Mining docket previously held by Najib Balala who has since been moved to the Tourism ministry.

The 45-year old legislator with an extensive experience in Information and Communication Technology said he was ready to take the ministry to the next level, further thanking Balala for setting the groundwork for him.

Kazungu who is the Malindi MP dispelled the notion that by taking up the job, he would have abandoned the constituents who elected him in 2013 stating that the position allowed him to serve all Kenyans.

“I don’t see it as I am giving up something for another, it is about serving the people – there is no conflict in my view,” he said.

He added that he had received outpouring support from the Malindi people and was excited that he was pitted to be the first ever cabinet Minister from the region.

Since independence Malindi has never produced a Cabinet Secretary, I am glad to have broken the jinx,” Kazungu continued.

Despite having a thriving career in ICT, the soft spoken Kazungu says he is ready for the challenge in the mining sector stating that he is used to handling tough assignments.

The mining sector is fairly new and Balala is the first CS, I think he has done well by putting the right infrastructure in place now it is for us to execute,” he added.

His first agenda once formally appointed after vetting would be to initiate programmes that would ensure Kenya’s bid to be a formidable force in the mining industry in the region is achieved.

“There will be a lot of hard work and consultation from the shareholders in the industry to ensure the Jubilee manifesto with regard to mining sector is met,” he continued.

The father of two adds that once vetted and formally appointed he will work with outgoing Mining CS Najib Balala to review the progress of reviving stalled projects.

“I just don’t want to meet the targets, I want to surpass and shatter them so as to make Kenyans proud,” he stated.

He said the new team was a ‘distinguished’ lot who would steer the country in the right direction.

Kazungu who holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Moi university, with a specialization in Information and Media Technology and has previously worked with tech firm IBM and Lenovo among others.

On the question of whether he would have been a better candidate for ICT ministry against nominee Ben Mucheru, Kazungu was quick to state that the appointing authority must have seen something in him to put him at the Mining ministry while also lauding Mucheru who currently works with Google as an old hand in the tech industry.
