NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 19 – Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) is to hold a National Executive Council (NEC) meeting on Thursday to discuss the meeting with President Uhuru Kenyatta which mediated an agreement with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).

The matter shall further be deliberated on Friday by the Advisory Council, before a final position is adopted.

One of the topics in contention is whether the union should settle for the pay deal brokered by the President, or the matter be taken to the Supreme Court for judicial determination.

The matter has been the subject of a sharp division amongst the top leadership with Secretary General Wilson Sossion pushing for the matter to go for judicial determination.

The six union Steering Committee members who attended last week’s State House meeting have maintained their stance saying teachers must get their September salaries, and union dues released to end the financial crisis.

The TSC in the meantime says it is still holding consultations on the Presidential request to pay teachers their September dues and to craft a new collective bargaining agreement.

TSC Chairperson Lydia Nzomo told Capital FM News that a lot of things have to be taken into consideration before the directive is implemented.

“It is a matter that has to be discussed in detail and as at now, I cannot say much but once consultations are completed I will be able to issue a comprehensive statement,” she said.
