Lawyers for Alphonse Kambu had sought to have the plea deferred to Friday in order to allow the suspect time to seek an ‘amicable resolution’/CFM
NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 5 – Nairobi Chief Magistrate Daniel Ogembo has directed that the United Nations employee accused of assaulting his Kenyan lover to plead to charges of causing grievous harm.
Lawyers for Alphonse Kambu had sought to have the plea deferred to Friday in order to allow the suspect time to seek an ‘amicable resolution’.
The lawyers, Kirathe Wandungi and Kiragu Wathuta, also argued that their client was not stable enough to plead to the charges as his arrest came as a surprise.
The lawyers told the court that Kambu was to go in for questioning on Thursday morning but was instead arrested on Wednesday.
They’ve also argued that as an employee of the UN, he enjoys immunity.
But Jacinta Nyamosi for the prosecution says they’ve received a note verbal from the UN saying the immunity the accused enjoys does not extend to suspected criminal activity.
