NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 6 – The Kenyan Conference of Catholic Bishops has called on Kenyans to work with the government and anti-corruption institutions to fight graft.

Led by the chairman Philip Anyolo, the Bishops who were on a site visit to the Papal altar under construction at the University of Nairobi graduation grounds, said the recent reports of corruption in public offices were against the principles of hard work, honesty, integrity and the rule of law.

“We must tackle the festering wound of corruption… the heightened looting from public coffers by those entrusted with public resources,” said Anyolo.

The Bishops also warned against reckless and irresponsible utterances made by leaders that could wage war between communities and instead called on Kenyans to foster peace amongst each other.

“Let us embrace the values on integrity and work towards a peaceful united country. Let us stand together and unite to build a secure and God-fearing nation,” he added.

The Catholic Church also expressed concern over the rising number of exam-cheating cases which have been reported in the ongoing Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education exams, urging parents and teachers to instill discipline in children to stop the habit.

“We need to restore the high standards of our education system characterised by honesty and truth. Our school children need to be brought up in a moral and upright way that is in conformity with our African and Christian traditions,” he stated.

The church also called on the government to consult them before making decisions that had direct moral and spiritual implications and also affected the operations of the church saying this would result in friction between believers and the State.

They also implored all Catholics and Kenyans of goodwill to pray for a successful visit by Pope Francis scheduled for 25th of this month.

The religious leaders called on Kenyans to appreciate the diverse cultures in the country and respect them so as to foster peace.
