And for Mizengo Pinda, Tanzania’s outgoing Prime Minister, it is time to ensure justice is taken as close to the people as possible.
“Access to justice requires the rehabilitation of our justice system in order to achieve efficiency and optimal performance,” he said, citing his own country. “We are supporting the judiciary in its plan to build High Court centres in every region of the country and establish Courts of Resident Magistrates in every district.”
The judicial dialogue was sponsored by key development partners – World Bank, European Union and the German Cooperation (GiZ).
Hassane Cisse, World Bank’s Director for Governance Global Practice, said they support the initiative because of the contribution the judiciary has in world development.
“The World Bank recognizes that an effective judiciary is important for equitable development, peace, good governance and the well-being of citizens,” he said, “strengthening African justice systems is a key priority for building investor confidence, promoting businesses that can create the much needed jobs, and boosting the continent’s economies.”
