3 suspects shot dead in Umoja, Nairobi

GUN-BARRELNAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 9 – Three suspected gangsters were shot dead during a robbery incident within Umoja, early Monday morning.

Nairobi Police Boss Japheth Koome told Capital FM News that the three who were on a motorbike confronted a plainclothes policeman who was with his friend at about 1am.

He said that it was after the friend was robbed that the officer opened fire and killed the three.

“The thugs were on a motorbike when they waylaid two men one of whom was an undercover police officer. It was after they had stolen Sh5,000 from his friend that the policeman opened fire killing three of the gangsters on the spot,” he stated.

Koome says a fourth accomplice who was in the vicinity managed to escape and that a search is being carried out to find him.

The police boss gave a stern warning to thugs that they will be dealt with decisively.

“I want to put all criminals on notice that we will bear down hard on them and will not spare anyone. We will crack down on anyone who goes against the law and ensure that there is law and order in the city,” he stressed.

Koome further indicated that patrols within the city and estates will be increased in the period leading to, during and after the Papal visit later this month.

He stated that the police will ensure that no body causes mayhem during the visit by the Pope.

Over the weekend, State House Spokesman Manoah Esipisu stated that 10,000 policemen and another 10,000 from the National Youth Service would be deployed in the city during the Pope’s three-day stay.
