MOMBASA, Kenya, Nov 12 – Twelve teachers were on Thursday charged in Mombasa after they were found with unauthorised examination materials for the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE).

The teachers from Star of the Sea Primary School were arrested on Wednesday for allegedly distributing examination materials through WhatsApp.

They denied the charges before they were released on a bond of Sh500,000 each with surety of a similar amount or alternative cash bail of Sh200,000.

They appeared before Magistrate Diana Mochache who described the offence as “extremely serious” with far reaching consequences in the education sector in the country.

There have been massive reports of examination leakages across the country since the start of national examinations beginning with the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education exams.
