NAIROBI, Kenya, Oct 8 – Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD) leader Raila Odinga’s brother, Oburu now says he is ready to defend William Ruto in The Hague because the Deputy President is innocent.

Oburu who spoke at a press conference on Friday made clear it was not in doubt Ruto was fixed to face the crimes against humanity charges and he knows who did it – Uhuru Kenyatta’s people.

“As one of the people who was with William Ruto throughout that time, I am willing to testify if we are invited,” said Oburu, who is Raila’s elder brother.

Oburu says there is no way Ruto could have organised the 2007-8 violence that rocked the country because he was with him most of the time.

“Some of us were with William Ruto on a daily basis immediately after the elections until the deal was signed with (former President Mwai) Kibaki. William Ruto never went home. I personally believe that William Ruto is actually innocent. When he was charged I thought there was going to be credible evidence to be produced but what happened is most of the people called to testify against him, were from PNU – our opponents – and (MP Moses) Kuria has publicly admitted that they fixed him.”

“Why is Uhuru Kenyatta’s government concentrating on political propaganda and so on when we know it is him who fixed Ruto? Now if he wants to say sorry, let him say sorry there is no problem with that.”

The ICC prosecution has already closed its case against Ruto and journalist Joshua arap Sang. Defence teams are also expected to file a motion of-no-case-to-answer by November 20.

On the other hand, Kuria has agreed to be a defence witness in the Ruto-Sang case if the court partially or fully rejects the motion.

It is the first time a prominent ODM member has expressed willingness to testify in the Ruto case.
Former PM Odinga on Tuesday turned the guns on President Kenyatta in the unfolding saga, saying his allies led by former PNU spokesman and current Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria were responsible.

Odinga said there was no way he or his ODM party would have ‘fixed’ a top member and negotiator of the party during the disputed 2007 General Election.
