NAIROBI, Kenya, Oct 27 – The administrator at the Kangundo Level 4 Hospital Lawrence Mulungye has been suspended and an eight-member taskforce appointed to investigate circumstances that led to the deaths of four babies at the facility.
Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua stated that the month-long suspension will pave the way for investigations into the deaths that occurred a fortnight ago.
“The cleaning up of Machakos will continue and thus people who are not serious about their work and are corrupt will not be spared,” he said.
He says that the taskforce will be charged with investigating what happened, who was responsible and which systems failed.
It is supposed to give recommendations on how to improve the quality of services and care at hospitals in the county.
The task force includes Health Minister Naomi Mutie, Health Chief Officer Collins Sila, Maxwell Ludanyo, Charles Nzioki, Kirubi Kariuki, Juliana Muendo, Jeremiah Mutunga and Jacinta Kondo.
Mutua also suspended four officers at the Kathiani Hospital for one month for alleged dereliction of duty leading to pathetic services and conditions.
They included the hospital’s administrator Alice Nyamai , Public Health Officer Mbevi Mbole, the Engineering Technician Pauline Muia and the Public Health Officer Faith Kamanthe.
Mutua also sent home the Masinga sub-county administrator Arnold Mbole and a driver Raphael Kauwe for allegedly attempting to divert 80 bags of cement meant for the construction of river dams in Kithyoko.
He said police were investigating the case.
Two county inspectorate officers Abubakar Muli of Matungulu and Michael Muasya from Mavoko were also dismissed for allegedly collecting bribes from building contractors in the county.
