Kiambu neurosurgical unit operational

KIAMBU-NEUROSURGICALKIAMBU, Kenya, Oct 29 – Kiambu County Health Executive Jonah Mwangi has reiterated the county government’s commitment to transforming the public health sector.

In a rejoinder to stories ran in sections of the media regarding the Kiambu General Hospital neurosurgery unit, Dr Mwangi explained that the county government still runs a neurosurgical unit at the hospital and so far 200 patients have been screened with 47 of them undergoing successful operations.

He said the hospital put up the unit in December 2013, and it was a progressive project, expected to be complete in 2017.

“We realised the need to put up a neurosurgical unit in Kiambu due to the high number of patients especially children below five in 2013. The project is progressive and phase one involved renovating the area where the clinic was to be set up. Phase two was equipping the area and that is where we are,” he said.

Mwangi added that the neurosurgical clinic is periodic, held every four months and hence not as busy as other units. “There was an urgent measure to renovate the general hospital, and as common practice, the hospital management looks for the rooms that are not so busy to relocate patients from the wards to be renovated.”

“The neurosurgical unit was one of the rooms picked to host all female surgical patients as the general hospital undergoes a facelift,” he noted adding that any emergency neurosurgical issues are currently addressed from the main theatre.
