Kenya to honour 188 mashujaas

MASHUJAA-DAY-2014-2NAIROBI, Kenya, Oct 19 – The government has announced plans to honour two heroes and two heroines each from the country’s 47 counties during this year’s Mashujaa Day celebrations at the Nyayo National Stadium

Nairobi Regional Coordinator Njoroge Ndirangu said the move is aimed at celebrating their input in the socio-economic and political development.

“As we reflect on our rich history and the aspirations of the founding fathers of our great nation, it is a time that we take stock of the gains we have made so far and the challenges we intend to overcome,” he said.

He added: “This is a time when we pay tribute to our gallant heroes who paid the price for our freedom during the struggle for independence. We also hail the post-independence heroes and heroines who over the years have continued to render distinguished service to our nation.”

Ndirangu told journalists that undisclosed number of security personnel will throw a cordon off the city to ward off any threats of terrorist activities from any quarters.

The Regional Coordinator urged Kenyans to co-operate with security agents in the management of the country.

“Adequate measures have been taken to ensure maximum security during the celebrations; security agents have already secured the Nyayo National Stadium ahead of the celebrations. Security officers have also been deployed to patrol the central business district, the city estates and its environs,” Ndirangu said.

He said cases of insecurity had reduced mainly due to the “Nyumba Kumi” Initiative which aims at making Kenyans aware of the happenings in their neighborhood and identifies anything out of the norm.

The climax of the national celebrations held to commemorate the countries’ heroes and heroines by highlighting the role they have played in the development of the country and the world will be an address by President Uhuru Kenyatta.

The regional coordinator said gates to the 35,000-seater sports facility will be opened at 7am and adviced all guests to be seated by 9am.

“H.E. The President, will thereafter inspect a tri-service guard of honour mounted by the Kenya Defence Forces. This will then be followed by a march past by contingents of the uniformed forces and a fly past by the Kenya Airforce,” Ndirangu said.

Popular artists from the 90s such as Ruben Kigame and Sukuma Bin Ongaro have been lined up to entertain the guests attending the event while Phillip Yegon (of the Emily Chepchumba fame), Nyota Ndogo, Ally B, Rose Ogonya, Pheny Kerubo among others have also slotted to perform during the event.
