NAIROBI, Kenya, Oct 30 – Bharti Airtel has donated a mobile clinic worth Sh10 million to support the First Lady’s Beyond Zero campaign which aims to reduce high rates of maternal and child mortality in Kenya.

The company’s leadership lead by Airtel Africa CEO Christian de Faria, Airtel Kenya chairman Titus Naikuni and Airtel Kenya CEO Adil El Youssefi presented the fully fledged mobile clinic to First Lady Margaret Kenyatta at State House, Nairobi Thursday.

The team commended the First Lady’s commitment to fighting maternal mortality and improving child health in the country through the Beyond Zero Campaign, which has seen her named the 2014 UN person of the year.

“Airtel recognises the need for good health and general wellbeing of expectant women and infants. The Beyond Zero campaign has greatly improved maternal and child health services across the country hence ensuring women receive the right level of care when giving birth. Airtel is delighted at the opportunity to be amongst the members of the Beyond Zero community and we would like to congratulate Her Excellency the First Lady Margaret Kenyatta on the success of this Campaign that continues to save more lives,” said de Faria.

On March 8 this year, Airtel supported the Beyond Zero Campaign by sponsoring 100 Airtel Premier customers and 20 Airtel divas employees who participated in the half Marathon held at Nyayo stadium. Christian committed that he will also lead the Airtel team to next year’s marathon which is scheduled to take place on 6th March 2016.

The Beyond Zero campaign which was launched in January 2014 targets to purchase 47 fully equipped mobile clinics for all counties. Since the campaign began, 32 fully kitted mobile clinics have been purchased.

In support of the government’s effort to improve health service provision in Kenya, Airtel has in the past launched health initiatives which include donation of space heaters to reduce infant mortality in Kiambu County hospitals, support of the Fountain Africa Trust Midwives maternal health program in Bungoma County and partnering with the Ministry of Health in the fight against Ebola.

Other initiatives are partnering with the Kenya National Blood Transfusion Service to run a blood donation drive during the World Blood Donor day celebrations on 14th June this year, doctors on call partnership with Medanta Africare which is currently working and with Pan Africa Life Assurance Limited and MicroEnsure to launch Airtel Insurance which will offer Airtel customers in Kenya free life, accident and hospitalization insurance with increasing benefits based on their monthly airtime usage.
