NAIROBI, Kenya, Sep 12 – Two heroin treatment centres have been opened in Mombasa County by the government.

These will help in controlling the drug menace affecting the youth in the county.

According to the Director of Medical Services Nicolas Muraguri the centres will target at least nine thousand drug users who inject themselves with heroin.

This follows the government’s consistent effort of fighting drug use in the coastal region.

For instance, a campaign to evict drug users, peddlers and barons from Likoni was launched last week.

This saw Mombasa County Commissioner Nelson Marwa declare war on drug use in Mombasa and its environs.

Additionally, 42 drug peddlers were arrested in Majengo in a crackdown seeking to end the supply of drugs in the area.

Late last month, one hundred people were charged with drug trafficking and millions of shillings obtained from selling narcotics were seized at the coast.

“The drug menace is contributing to radicalization and organized criminal gangs, hence, the need for cooperation from the community. The addicts need to be rehabilitated,” Mombasa County Commissioner Salim Mohamoud told the media.

The establishment of the rehabilitation centres follows President Kenyatta’s initiative to wipe out illicit brews across the country especially in Central Kenya.

The crackdown saw liquor outlets in Murang’a County, Gatanga, Tharaka Nithi being destructed to end the production of substandard alcohol that has left hundreds dead and families broken.
