MOMBASA, Kenya Sep 18 – General Service Unit officers from the Recce Squad were on Friday deployed to the port of Mombasa after a ship suspected to be carrying drugs and firearms was intercepted.

Mombasa police commander Francis Wanjohi said they will subject the cargo to 100 per cent verification. It docked on Thursday night.

“We are going to subject the ship to 100 per cent verification because we want to ascertain the contents of the cargo,” Wanjohi said.

It was carrying vehicles and containers which are believed to be packed with unknown drugs and firearms and ammunitions.

There was tight security at the port after the Recce Squad officers took over from security guards and regular police officers.

Kenya has lately intensified the war on drugs, with the government having blown up two ships in the high seas after they were seized with drugs in Mombasa.
