Speaking to Capital FM News, Lumumba who is popularly known as PLO said he has already committed Sh50,000 to start-off the Fund and is now urging Kenyans to contribute towards the initiative.
“In response and in order to give our teachers support and to be in solidarity with them, I am creating something called ‘Adopt A Teacher’ which is a solidarity Fund and I am making a contribution of Sh50,000,” he said on Saturday.
Once the resources are put together, Lumumba said the monies will be distributed to teachers by the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) and not the government.
“I believe that the money should be administered by the teachers themselves and they should determine how they go about it; remember they have been threatened that they will not receive their September salaries,” he argued.

The crisis has escalated in the country for three weeks, leading to Friday’s order to have all public and private schools closed until the situation is resolved.
Lumumba has in the meantime faulted the government for failing to handle the issue of teachers strike calling for more dialogue.
“I believe when a nation is facing a crisis, a nation reasons together. I personally looked forward when my President would have called the teachers, called the opposition, so that we sit together as a family so that even if the cake is small how can we improve it,” Lumumba said.
