NAIROBI, Kenya, Sept 13 – A woman who developed surgical complications after birth has been airlifted from Mandera to Nairobi where she is to receive specialized treatment.
Festus Njuguna, a flight nurse with AMREF Flying Doctors told Capital FM News they responded to a call from Mandera County Referral Hospital where the woman has been admitted and receiving treatment for one month after developing intestinal blockage after she gave birth.
“After she was discharged she went home and suffered some sort of intestinal obstruction, she was brought back to hospital where the initial operation was done and it didn’t heal so well and the abdomen busted,” he told.
“The surgeons went in again repeated the operation and still there was some leakage on the operation site. They thought it is good to refer the patient to come for specialized treatment at KNH.”
The AMREF official said they were called to evacuate her after local surgeons failed to rectify the complication despite performing several procedures.
The lady was transferred to the Kenyatta National Hospital where she is receiving treatment. She was accompanied by her mother and husband.
“The patient was quite dehydrated, the heart rate was very fast and blood sugar was on the lower side. We have give her oxygen, some fluids and some medication and now she looks a bit brighter, well hydrated and the urine has improved,” Njuguna said upon arrival at Nairobi’s Wilson Airport.
Hassan Hussein Adan, a relative to the patient said they had to airlift following advice from doctors in Mandera
“We decided to bring her to Nairobi, after the doctors he said they cannot be able to help the patient so they said they have to refer the patient to Kenyatta National Hospital,” Adan told Capital FM News.
