MACHAKOS, Kenya, Aug 22 – Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua has said that his Maendeleo Chap Chap and Unity Movement was not aimed at dividing the Kamba community but seeking political and economic liberation for the region.

Mutua said those alleging that he was dividing the Kamba community were only interested in perpetuating the politics of poverty.

“It is shocking that these leaders only aspire to become tribal kingpins of poor people .They do not want prosperity for our region yet some have served in high positions for decades,” said Mutua , during the movement’s first rally in Kilome constituency, Makueni County.

He said the Kamba community was not for auction adding it should negotiate politically with groups that will help roll back poverty in the region.
“Some leaders have in the past been negotiating for power on behalf of the community only to satisfy their personal interests. This has to change,” said Mutua.

He said that a section of Ukambani leaders who are panicking due to the movement do not understand that there is a wind of change blowing across the region.

“Kenya is changing and so is Ukambani. Even President Obama who recently toured the country said there is need for a generational change and a shift in the political mindset among Kenyans,” said Mutua.

Speaking during a series of rallies in Malili, Salama, Sultan Hamud and Kasikeu trading centres in Makueni County , Mutua said the movement was not formed to pursue power but to spur economic development for the people of the region.

He also held a meeting at the Malili Guest House where he met over 2,000 opinion leaders from Makueni.

Mutua who later spoke to Capital FM News said he was willing to work with like-minded leaders from the region and who are not focused on empty political rhetoric.

The new political and economic movement revolving around the Machakos Governor was unveiled on Thursday by political leaders allied to Mutua and is expected to heighten the political temperatures in Ukambani ahead of the 2017 General Elections.

Already politicians allied to Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka have opposed the movement saying it was a scheme to clip the political clout of the former VP.

Political and opinion leaders drawn from Makueni , Kitui and Machakos Counties have also backed efforts by the Machakos Governor to unify Ukambani leaders through the launch of the Maendeleo Chap Chap and Unity movement which will revolve around Mutua’s development model dubbed Maendeleo Chap Chap.

On Saturday, Mutua who was hosted by Kilome MP Regina Ndambuki said the movement was the only way to uplift the Kamba community from the bondage of poverty and marginalisation.

MPs Rachel Nyamai (Kitui South), Vincent Musyoka (Mwala) and over 75 MCAs from Ukambani accompanied him.

Ndambuki said Mutua was a progressive politician out to lead the region to prosperity adding she will not be intimidated to stop supporting his noble cause.

Musyoka said the political fame of some leaders in Ukambani had diminished and they should hang their gloves.
“Nguma nithamaa (fame migrates). Time for change is now, “said Musyoka.

Saturday’s rallies in Makueni were a follow up of a rally in Mavoko last week where Ukambani MPs requested Mutua to convene meetings to unite the Kamba community and chart a development agenda.
