MACHAKOS, Kenya, Aug 20 – Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua has been backed in his efforts to unite Ukambani leaders through the launch of the Maendeleo Chap Chap and Unity movement.

Makueni County leaders said the movement was the only way to uplift the Kamba community from the bondage of poverty and marginalisation.

Speaking during a consultative meeting hosted for leaders from Makueni County at the Machakos People’s Park, MPs, MCAs, opinion, youth and religious leaders all backed Mutua as a progressive politician out to lead the region to prosperity.

The meeting was a follow up of a rally at Mavoko last week where Ukambani MPs requested Mutua to convene meetings to unite the Kamba community and chart a development agenda.

Mutua said it was painful that the region continues to lag behind in terms of development due to poor leadership.

“It pains me to see our people wallow in the miasma of poverty while our leaders continue to posture for titles and power. We must unite and focus on leadership that brings change and better lives,” said Mutua.

He added that he was not interested in becoming a regional political king saying his desire was to see that Ukambani regained its political and economic glory.

“I have no time for political power games that will not add food or provide water and good roads for my people. This is my philosophy,” said Mutua.

MPs Victor Munyaka (Machakos Town), Regina Ndambuki (Kilome), Itwiku Mbai (Masinga), Protus Akuja (Loima), Nicholas Ngikolong (Turkana East), Joseph Samal (Isiolo) and former Kibwezi MP Kalembe Ndile attended the forum.

Munyaka and Mbai said Mutua was the regional political and development messiah and should be supported by all progressive leaders.

Mbai added that the Governor’s development track record was great and should be replicated across the other Ukambani counties.

“Our people now have water in their homes and that’s the kind of politics we admire. The Governor is a true servant leader,” said Mbai.

Makueni County Assembly Speaker Bernard Musau who read the meetings resolutions said the leaders had resolved to rally behind Mutua saying he had introduced a new way of thinking and doing things.

He said his Maendeleo Chap Chap philosophy had shown that things could be done efficiently and in a timely manner.

“High speed of development means eliminating poverty within a short time,” said Musau.

He said the philosophy was people centred, high quality, efficiency and speed in delivery of development projects.
