NAIROBI, Kenya, Aug 11 – The secondary schoolgirl who was found with bhang during a matatu joyride has been sentenced to 18 months probation under the care of her parents.

Lawyer Gladys Wamaitha who is representing the girl told Capital FM News that the student will have to see a probation officer once every month who will access her conduct.

“We were in court yesterday evening where a hearing was held in chambers at the Principal Magistrate’s Court in Baricho. During the hearing, the parents of the girl were not even allowed to be there. However the girl was placed on probation under her parents,” she stated.

She however pointed out that they will contest the ruling as the rights of the minor were violated.

“She will need to go to see a probation officer once a month and I think this is unrealistic as she is still in school. This will impact on her education and we will be appealing that tomorrow (Wednesday) at the High Court,” she stated.

The girl was among 45 high school students arrested for smoking bhang, drinking and having sex in a matatu.

The girl had hidden bhang and a matchbox in her underpants.

The 33-seater matatu was intercepted on the highway by officers from the Sagana Traffic Police base.

The Form Four student pleaded guilty to being in possession of bhang and her friends are believed to have thrown away drugs and alcohol before they were arrested.

The court had earlier ordered that the girl be remanded in custody at the Sagana Police Station until August 11 for mention and presentation of a social enquiry report.
