NAIROBI, Kenya, Aug 11 – History was made in Kenya Tuesday following appointment of the first female Brigadier of the Kenya Defence Forces.

Fatumah Ahmed was enlisted in KDF in 1983 and served under the Women Service Corps.

“Some of the notable appointments in her 32 years of service include Battalion Second Command (BN 21C), Staff Officer II Audit Personnel Records, Staff Officer I Personnel and Administration, Colonel Personnel at the Kenya Air Force Headquarters and Managing Director, DEFMIS,” a statement from KDF said.

Brigadier Ahmed is a graduate of the National Defence College.

Additionally, she takes over as the Managing Director of Defence Forces Medical Insurance Scheme (DEFMIS).

The appointment was made by President Uhuru Kenyatta during posting, promotions and appointments of officers of the Kenya Defence Forces.

Major General George Mayamba Owinow has been appointed as Commandant, Kenya Military Academy. On the other hand, Major General Ngewa Mukala has been named Commandant, Defence Staff College.

Levi Franklin Mghalu has been appointed the Kenya Navy Commander after being promoted to Major General.

Daniel Kimutai Pyaban was also promoted to Brigadier and takes over as the Commander of Kenya Rapid Deployment Capability.

Others who have been promoted to Brigadier positions include James Magige Gitiba who takes over as Chief of Logistics at Kenya Army Headquarters, Godfrey Aumah Buluma becomes the Chief of Operations, Plans and Training at Kenya Army Headquarters while George Odhiambo Walwa takes over as Chief of Operations at the Defence Headquarters.

Patrick Nderitu was also promoted to Brigadier and appointed Director, International Peace Support Training Centre.

Simon Mureithi Wachira has been appointed Deputy Commandant and the Chief Instructor Defence Staff College while Vincent Naisha Loonena will be the Base Commander at Mtongwe.

The Defence Headquarters has a new Chief Personnel following the appointment of Martin Kizito Ong’oyi who has also been promoted to Brigadier.

Kahawa Garrison has also been allocated a new Commandant with the appointment of Henry Noah Ofulah who has also been promoted to Brigadier.

William Karisa Shume will take charge as the Commander 6 Brigade.
