Goin, who reports on the Senate, garnered 25 votes to clinch the Deputy Secretary’s seat/CFM

NAIROBI, Kenya, Aug 14 – Capital FM’s parliamentary reporters Jane Goin and Laban Wanambisi registered landslide victories to clinch top seats in elections of the Kenya Parliamentary Journalists Association (KPJA) held Friday.

Goin, who reports on the Senate, garnered 25 votes to clinch the Deputy Secretary’s seat. She beat off competition from Good News Broadcasting Service Television’s (GBS TV) Eric Munene and Aaron Ndonyi from Around The Globe (ATG) Radio who got two and four votes respectively.

Wanambisi retained the Treasurer’s seat after beating People Daily’s Dinah Ondari by 30 votes to 2.

In other results, Standard Group’s Roselyn Obala became only the second female chairperson in the history of the association after she floored The Star’s Gideon Keter’s and Moses Njagi from the Standard Group.

Obala takes over from Caroline Wafula, after she got 17 votes with Keter followed closely with 14 votes while Njagi got two votes.

In her acceptance speech, Obala pledged to work together with the incoming office bearers to uplift the reporting standards of Parliament’s proceeding through training and capacity building. She also said she aims to spur the association to the next level.

“Caroline, I know I am taking over from you, I also know I have quite a lot to do because of the things you have done for KPJA. I am confident that with the support of the members and my new office we will achieve more,” she said.

Nation Media Group’s Edwin Obuya and Jeremiah Kiplagat won the Vice-Chairman and Secretary’s seat while George Okatchi retained the Committee Member Liaison post.

Obuya took the newly created post after beating his NMG colleague Kenneth Bundi with 24 votes against 10 votes.

Kiplagat beat Dinah Ondari and David Mwere and now he takes over from Ibrahim Oruko of The Star Newspaper. Oruko did not defend the post.

Keter bounced back from the defeat in the chairperson’s post to upset Kass Magazine David Choge by 18 votes to 14 votes.

Outgoing chairperson Wafula thanked the members for their support and commitment that has led to the association growing in numbers from 17 members in 2014 to 47 members in 2015.

Wafula’s tenure saw the introduction of accreditation cards for parliamentary journalists and as well as improved relations between Parliament’s leadership and journalists.
