MACHAKOS, Kenya, Aug 11 – Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua says he will convene a meeting of all leaders from Ukambani to decide the region’s political and economic future.

This comes after five MPs from the region called on him to unite the community and spread his development record.

Mutua told a public rally in the county that the time has come to either choose development or rhetoric.

“I have listened to the appeal from my fellow leaders that I should bring all our leaders together and I have accepted that I will convene a meeting of all leaders so that we deliberate and agree on our destiny as the Kamba people,” he stated.

Mutua reiterated his agenda is to see Machakos residents access basic needs such as water and enjoy better livelihoods.

He added: “I will go to Kitui, Makueni and I will go around the Ukambani region as a leader who has been called upon by other leaders in order that I can talk to people about our destiny.”

In a thinly veiled attack on former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka, the Machakos Governor said that political leaders from the region are panicking due to his strong development agenda.

“Some leaders are saying I am dividing the Kamba Community. I ask you is bringing ambulances to serve the people dividing the Kamba? Is digging boreholes and bringing tapped water dividing the Kamba? Is bringing medical equipment to our hospitals so that people get better services, dividing the Kamba? I want to tell them that my development agenda will go on, whether they like it or not,” declared Mutua.

The MPs claimed that the Governor’s popularity due to his fast approach to development projects makes ex-VP Musyoka and Machakos Senator Johnson Muthama uncomfortable.

“There some people who have been busy going around the county spreading lies about us, and I am beginning to think that maybe these people are not the one abusing us, maybe they have been sent to abuse us, because their masters feel that the way Mutua is performing, he may spoil our political fortunes,” Mutua told a public baraza in Makadara area in Machakos County.

Mwingi North MP John Munuve and his Mwingi Central counterpart Joe Mutambo said the Ukambani region has lagged behind in development due to selfish leadership.

“There are people who have led us for over 20 years but have nothing to show for it, not even a borehole or a kiosk,” said Munuve.

Mwala MP Vincent Musyoki and TIP-TIP Party Leader Kalembe Ndile added that some politicians were afraid of the wind of change blowing across Ukambani while Regina Ndambuki (Kilome), Rachael Nyamai (Kitui South) and Benson Mbai (Masinga) said residents have realised one of the ingredients of eliminating poverty is development and not empty rhetoric.
