NAIROBI, Kenya, Aug 18 – At least 45 more people were arrested Tuesday in Nairobi for stepping on the #KideroGrass.

This followed the arrest of 71 on Monday by Nairobi City County Government’s (NCCG) newly created Environmental Monitoring and Enforcement team for the same offence and littering.

Speaking to Capital FM News, the head of the team, Tim Tinega, said those arrested would be required to pay a Sh2,000 fine to secure their release.

“But we expect the number of those arrested to decline in the coming days as Nairobi residents come to the realisation that Kidero grass is no joking matter,” he said.

In a press statement released on Monday, Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero explained that the measure had been taken to spare the county government the expense of constant re-planting.

“The cost of restoring Nairobi is bearing heavily on the NCCG and we will do all within our powers to ensure sanity is brought back to this great city. Please avoid littering and dumping illegally. Ensure to only use designated pathways or else you will meet the same consequences.

“The NCCG is more than committed to walk with Nairobi residents in the path to restore Nairobi City as Green City in the Sun and ensure Nairobi continues being the leading investment and holiday destination for many across the world,” he is quoted in the release as having said.

‘Kidero’s grass’ was a running joke in the run up to US President Barack Obama’s visit to Kenya in July.

Kenyans took to Twitter to post memes poking fun at the county government’s belated efforts to, “green the city in the sun.”

President Uhuru Kenyatta caught on with the trend and joked that Kidero’s planting efforts were in preparation for the Pope’s publicised visit in November.
