According to Homa Bay County Commander, John Omusanga, the Tuesday night incident occurred when a passenger boat collided with a stationery fishing vessel.
“The bodies of the two children aged four and two years have been retrieved. The passenger boat was carrying 24 people while the fishing boat had four fishermen on board. Most of the passengers had life jackets and that is what helped in rescuing them,” he said.
“Those rescued are at Kiwa Island and efforts are being made to transport them to the mainland.”
An adult who was reported missing and feared dead was later found alive.
The passenger boat was heading to Sori in Migori County from Remba Island in Homa Bay County.
Police, the Kenya Red Cross and local fishermen conducted a rescue operation Wednesday morning.
