NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 3 – The police have released the identity of the suspect behind the killing of Hashim Omar, a senior National Intelligence Service officer in Mombasa on Thursday evening.

Coast Regional Commander Robert Kitur stated that Ismail Shosi is wanted over the killing of the officer who was shot as he left a mosque within Old Town.

Kitur indicated that Shosi who is an Al Shabaab recruit is behind a series of attacks targeting security officers and informers in Mombasa.

“The name of this suspect is Ismail Shosi. He lives in Bondeni area and whenever we appeal to the members of the public, there is a reward for that,” he indicated.

He said that Shosi operates within Old Town and usually dresses in a bui bui to evade police dragnets.

“This person is terrorising people mainly within this Island and even outside. That is why we are appealing to members of the public to assist us,” he said.

Omar succumbed to injuries in hospital after the shooting.

“That is a hit squad which eliminates police officers, their associates and friends and I am suspecting that this person may have been trained,” Kitur said.

Police said he was shot at around 8pm as he left Hanifa Mosque, in Old Town.

The gunmen escaped on foot following the incident.
