NAIROBI, Kenya Jul 10 – The government has gazetted next Saturday as a public holiday to celebrate Idd-Ul-Fitr.

The announcement is contained in a gazette notice signed by Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaiserry where he sets the day aside for celebrations that mark the end of the one month of fasting and prayers by Muslim faithful.

“It is notified for general information that Saturday, 18th July, 2015, will be observed as a public holiday to mark Idd-Ul-Fitr day,” states the notice.

Idd is celebrated after the month of Ramadhan.

The month-long fast comes to an end after Muslims sight the new moon in various parts of the world.

The holy month of Ramadhan started on June 18 amid tightened security to prevent criminals from taking advantage of busy evenings as Muslims go to mosques for prayers.
