NAIROBI, Kenya Jul 22 – Coalition of Reforms and Democracy (CORD) leaders in Nairobi have called for a truce between Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero and Kakamega County Senator Boni Khalwale.

ODM Nairobi Branch Chairman George Aladwa called on Kidero to withdraw a defamation case he filed against Khalwale for linking him with the near collapse of Mumias Sugar Company and in turn urged Khalwale to apologise and end his attacks on the Governor.

“We now urge the CORD principals to convene a high level meeting to seek a truce between the warring leaders,” Aladwa said.

The appeal comes after police on Friday morning lobbed teargas and shot in the air to disperse supporters of Governor Kidero and Khalwale who clashed outside the Milimani Law Courts.

The two groups confronted each other following a ruling by Justice Joseph Sergon who gave further orders barring the Kakamega Senator from linking Kidero to the collapse of Mumias Sugar Company.

CORD leader Raila Odinga and Governor Kidero condemned last Thursday’s attack on Khalwale and called on police to arrest those behind the attack.

Odinga termed the incident that led to the combative Senator to seek refuge in a public toilet as stupid.

Former Makadara MP Rueben Ndolo condemned the violence and absolved party members from blame saying the people who orchestrated the chaos were brought from outside the county.

Nairobi County Assembly Member Peter Emato said the party should encourage members to use amicable means to solve matters that are sensitive.

“The Governor had a right to go to court; Dr Khalwale had a right under the freedom of speech, though it might have injured the reputation of the Governor, which also give the Governor the credence to go to court, so the case is before the court and our elders are working tirelessly to make sure that this two great leaders work together,” said the Makongeni Ward Representative.

CORD co-chairmen Siaya Senator James Orengo and Machakos Senator Johnson Muthama have recently kicked off efforts to reconcile the two leaders.
