Nairobi Traffic Commandant Edward Mwamburi told Capital FM News that there was an increasing number of vehicles on Monday morning on the roads which had been deserted when Obama was in town.
Mwamburi pointed out that traffic is building up along Thika Road, Mombasa Road, Jogoo Road and Waiyaki way as many motorists resume work after most businesses closed.
“I would like to commend Kenyans for their cooperation during the visit of the US President. Everything went on smoothly and there were no major incidences. We had an easy time coordinating traffic and this shows that with proper organization, everything can go smoothly,” he stated while thanking Kenyans for their Cooperation during Obama’s visit and pointed out that it went a long way in ensuring that the visit was a success.
It is also expected that other institutions like the Milimani Law Courts, a number of schools and even banks were also due to resume operations Monday.
From Friday when the visit commenced, Limuru Road, Forest road all the way up to Kipande road were uncharacteristically free and clear of traffic as were Mombasa Road, Thika road, Uhuru Highway, Bunyala Road and the Museum Hill Interchange.
For fear of traffic ahead of Obama’s arrival, some schools closed for the day with some banks informing their clients that they would cut short their operating hours.
Nairobi Commandant Benson Kibue had earlier in the week announced that some roads would be closed from as early as 2pm Friday.
The Judiciary also announced that there would be no court proceedings at the Milimani Law Courts Friday.
On Thursday police released a more elaborate traffic plan for the capital Nairobi starting with the total closure of Mombasa road from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, Haile Selassie, a section of Waiyaki Way through to Westlands from 3pm.
Vehicles from Westlands to the CBD had been advised to use Ring Road, James Gichuru and Parklands while those from the CBD to Westlands are advised to use Murang’a Road, Ring Road and James Gichuru.
Some 10,000 police officers had been deployed to provide security in the capital.
