NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 6 – A Muslim cleric charged with trafficking underage girls to Lebanon for sex tourism has been sentenced to ten years in jail.

Sheikh Ali Samoja had been accused of trafficking an under-age girl to Nairobi on unknown dates in July 2011 where she was repeatedly defiled by a Lebanese national.

While delivering the sentence, Senior Resident Magistrate Judicaster Nthuku said according to the law, anyone who facilitated travel with the intention of commission of a sex offence was guilty of sex tourism.

She said the offence stood whether or not the sex offence was committed.

She said the prosecution had proved beyond reasonable doubt that the Sheikh from Bilal Muslim Mission in Nakuru had facilitated the travel of a minor to Nairobi.

Sheikh Samoja, a father of four, was arrested on December 16, 2011 at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport as he prepared to travel to Lebanon.
