NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 7 – The Judiciary on Tuesday said it had cleared over 13,000 old cases that had been pending in the court system for decades. A team of 14 judges deployed to clear old cases had by Tuesday closed 12, 581 of the cases that were inactive.

Some of the cases were filed as long ago as in the 1960s.

According to Public Affairs and Communication Director Naim Bilal, some of the cases were dismissed ‘for failure of parties to move to court.’

“They included four civil cases filed before Independence in 1962,” he said.

On Tuesday the judges sitting at Milimani Law Courts in Nairobi finalised 34 criminal appeals and gave a programme on hearing of other cases.

“The special courts also gave hearing dates, directions and granted confirmations during the drive that target 30, 000 cases in 10 High Court stations,” Bilal noted in a statement sent to newsrooms.

The initiative will continue in nine other High Courts that include Mombasa, Kisumu, Nakuru, Meru, Kakamega, Nyeri, Kisii, Machakos and Eldoret.

In February this year, Chief Justice Willy Mutunga launched the ‘Old Cases Clearance Initiative’ targeting at clearing 30,000 old cases and deployed 14 new judges to courts that had the highest backlog of cases.

In the first phase of the initiative 14, 779 cases were cleared at the High Court Division in Milimani.
