NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 17 – Police on Friday morning lobbed teargas and shot in the air to disperse supporters of Governor Evans Kidero and Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale who clashed outside the Milimani Law Courts.
The two groups confronted each other following a ruling by Justice Joseph Sergon who gave further orders barring the Kakamega Senator from linking Kidero to the collapse of Mumias Sugar Company.
Tension began inside the court after Kidero’s lawyer Tom Ojienda was asked to request them to vacate so that other cases could proceed.
Khalwale later addressed his supporters saying he has nothing personal against the Nairobi Governor.
“We are look for only one thing. We want the Mumias Sugar Company to flourish. We want the farmer to get his right; the workers there to get their rights so that even our children can go to school. Even if the corrupt person is a white man, an Asian, blue or even a Luo, we do not want to know. He must be held accountable,” he stated.
At the same time, he emphasised that the truth must be unearthed on what really happened at the company.
“The previous order by the court expired. Another order has been given barring me from talking about Mumias Sugar Company. We will respect that and abide by it. However, I tell you that the truth must come out as to what happened to the company and we have enough evidence towards this effect,” he stated.
Khalwale was nearly attacked Thursday by dozens of youths who were chanting pro-Kidero slogans outside the courts.
A combined effort of regular and Administration Police had to shield Khalwale from being roughed up by the rowdy pro-Kidero youths.
Justice Sergon issued fresh orders barring Khalwale from making comments about Kidero in relation to the Mumias Sugar Company controversy.
Inside the court, tension was very high as pro-Khalwale youths threatened to punish Governor Kidero’s supporters, whom they accused of bringing knives into the court.
The case will be heard on July 22.
