NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 23 – The Coalition of Reforms and Democracy has welcomed visiting Unites States of America President Barack Obama saying his Friday visit underscores the strategic partnership between the two nations.

In a statement sent to newsrooms, CORD principal Raila Odinga said the visit outlined the commitment the United States had in enhancing political, economic and security cooperation between the two countries.

“President Obama’s visit underscores the strategic partnership between Kenya and the United States and has a special significance for us as a country given his heritage,” read part of the statement.

He said the Opposition was looking forward to holding joint talks with Obama on areas of cooperation that would improve the lives of Kenyans.

“We welcome the opportunity to hold joint talks and discuss a range of issues including continued US support to Kenya in a range of fields that address the needs of the Kenyan people,” added Odinga.

Odinga and CORD co-principals Kalonzo Musyoka and Moses Wetangula are expected to meet Obama with the date, time and location of the meeting yet to be made public.

The Opposition is expected to discuss corruption, electoral reforms, security and trade in the country with Obama.

Odinga further stated that the engagements between the two nations would strengthen Kenya to become an anchor of prosperity and stability in Eastern Africa and be an outstanding role model for developing countries around the world.

Already Kenya is seen as the powerhouse in the East Africa region and one of the most secure which has seen it intervene in instabilities that have rocked neighbouring nations.

CORD called on Kenyans to give Obama and his entourage a befitting welcome adding that this was an opportune moment for Kenya to market itself.

“We have a historic chance to put this on display in a significant way. Let us rise to the occasion,” he concluded
