NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 06 – The National Alcoholic Beverages Association of Kenya (NABAK) says it will take legal action against individuals who destroyed their products and their property.

NABAK Secretary Eric Kiniti said it was unfortunate that some people had taken advantage of President Uhuru Kenyatta’s directive on illicit brews to go on a vandalism spree.

“The Presidential directive was very clear, so we are going to take action on individuals who have done things in their personal capacity,” Kiniti said.

He stated that a number of legal establishments have been targeted unduly by the crackdown.

Kiniti added that the indiscriminate raids in some counties are causing unnecessary anxiety which is bound to impair the ability of its members to meet its obligation as tax payers.

NABAK Chairman Gordon Mutugi is now proposing the creation of an intergovernmental agency comprised of Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) and Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) to assist in enforcement of rules set by the National Authority for Campaign against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) which is mandated with regulating the consumption of alcoholic beverage and brews in the country.

“The entire industry needs to have one body that encompasses all those government bodies, if you look at the government agencies that regulate us, all those bodies are disjointed and they make NACADA look infective whereas it is just the coordination that is lacking,” Masila said.

Ministry of Public Health, Ministry of Interior, County Governments and NABAK are among the other bodies that will make up the inter-governmental agency, they proposed.
