Brewers want to sue vandals during alcohol purge

NABAK said the intergovernmental agency will also be charged with the control of traditional and informal alcohol as well as industry involvement in developing policies related to alcohol regulation.

The association which comprises six industry players namely; London Distillers Kenya Ltd, Kenya Breweries Ltd, UDV (Kenya) Ltd, Kenya Wine Agencies Ltd, Keroche Breweries Ltd and Africa Spirits Ltd wants Ministry of Interior to publish a clarification of all the approved drinks in Kenya.

NABAK announced the industry is losing Sh10 million per day since the crackdown began while more than 10,000 jobs are now at risk both at the manufacturing, distribution and retail levels.

Kiniti commended the Government for its efforts to deal with the issue but urged authorities to engage all stakeholders in a concerted effort to deal with the problem which seems to be growing

“NABAK directly employs about 3,000 people and tens of thousands involved in distribution and sale of our products. All these jobs are now at risk. The government has, so far, lost in excess of Sh2 billion in the last week since the directive was issued,” Kiniti said.

The Association also confirmed that the London Distillers has been forced to close down its operation in Athi River factory sending its 500 employees on compulsory leave.
