NAIROBI, Kenya, Jun 30 – Police are investigating an incident in which a police officer shot himself dead in Nairobi’s Embakasi Nyayo Estate on Monday night.
The CID officer attached to Kayole Police Station, is reported to have picked a quarrel with his former girlfriend at a bar earlier in the day before he went to her house and shot several times through the door.
Unable to get her, the man then dropped a suicide note before shooting indiscriminately causing panic in the estate, according to a police report seen by Capital FM News.
The woman is said to have survived after escaping with her children when she sensed danger.
The officer, identified as Antony Kangu, later shot himself in the head and died on the spot while on the second floor where his body was found.
Police investigating the matter said the deceased was blaming the woman for his predicament, according to the suicide note recovered at the scene.
“He was armed with a pistol which was found with two bullets intact, having discharged others,” a senior police officer who visited the scene said.
Embakasi police chief Apolo Wanyama said they had launched an investigation into the chain of events that led to the shooting.
The incident came barely hours after a three-year-old boy was crushed to death by a school van that had just dropped him home in the same estate.
Witnesses said the incident occurred when the van was reversing moments after the boy alighted.
