NAIROBI, Kenya, June 11- At least seven people were killed Thursday morning in a road accident that occurred at Salama on the Nairobi-Mombasa highway.

According to police, the accident occurred when a mini bus rammed into a truck at about 6am.

Those killed were all seated on the left side of the bus, while others who sustained injuries are admitted to hospitals in Machakos and Emali.

“Six men and one lady died on the spot while several other were injured,” Traffic Commandant Charlton Mureithi told Capital FM News. “The driver escaped and is being hunted for dangerous driving.”

He regretted that “again human error and reckless driver attitude has cost dear innocent lives.”

The traffic boss called on motorists to be careful while driving to avoid such incidents.

He says traffic officers cannot be everywhere and urged for self discipline and change of attitude.

Sultan Hamud Traffic base commander Moses Jue on his part said the accident occurred at a notorious black spot and has warned motorists to exercise caution.

“The vehicles are still there but efforts are being made to clear the road,” he stated.

Despite stringent measures by the National Transport Safety Authority (NTSA), accidents continue to occur in various parts of the country claiming tens of lives but police says only the drivers can help change the trend by being extra- careful.
