NAIROBI, Kenya, Jun 29 – One person died on Monday afternoon in an accident that occurred on Lang’ata Road in Nairobi.
Police and the Kenya Red Cross said more than 20 other passengers were rushed to hospital, some in a serious condition.
“Two are seriously injured while nine others sustained minor injuries,” Nairobi Traffic Commandant Edward Mwamburi told Capital FM News.
The accident occurred when a matatu ferrying passengers from Ongata Rongai rolled after losing control near Uhuru Gardens, killing the passenger on the spot.
“The driver is at large but every effort through the SACCO is being made to nab him,” Mwamburi said.
“The vehicle was dangerously driven prior to the accident,” Charlton Mureithi, the Traffic Commandant explained.
The vehicle is registered under Serian Sacco which operates on the route.
Mureithi said police officers were in hot pursuit of the killer driver who fled after the accident.
“He is being hunted down through the employer. Kenyans must stand up to support our efforts and say no to reckless, careless driving and even speeding,” he stated.
The accident elicited comments from Kenyans on social media who called on the National Transport Safety Authority to act on PSVs on the route.
