NAIROBI, Kenya Jun 21 – Four MPs from Kakamega County have come to the defence of Devolution Secretary, Anne Waiguru against calls for her suspension following the Sh826 million alleged scandal at National Youth Service.

Lugari MP Ayub Savula said the Devolution CS is being unfairly targeted after she foiled the fraud and wrote to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations to probe the matter.

“How has she messed up, yet she is the one who stopped the payment of over Sh800 million,” posed Savula? “Anne Waiguru has done a very good job and we are fully behind her.”

Savula added: “The CID should be left to do its job and whoever is found culpable will be charged in court.”

CORD leader Raila Odinga and the Consumers Federation of Kenya (FKE) have called for a thorough investigation into the matter, with the former Prime Minister saying there is need to investigate Waiguru thoroughly.

Mumias East MP Benjamin Washiali and is Navakholo counterpart Emmanuel Wangwe said the matter should not be politicized and called for speedy investigations to determine those behind the attempted fraud.

“If Waiguru has a skeleton in her cupboard, let the police, let the Ethic and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) go ahead and investigate, if they find her to be culpable, they should take her to court as they have done with all other members of the cabinet,” Washiali said, adding, “people should not start tainting her name”.

Waiguru on Friday defended herself against allegations of corruption in the ministry, instead saying she is the one who raised a red flag on an attempted fraud.

Wangwe added: “We don’t want this issue of Anne Waiguru to take a political dimension. We want it to be investigated to completion.”

The Central Bank of Kenya is reported to have questioned payments worth millions of shillings since November last year. Some of the payments are said to have been authorized by the new Senior Deputy Director-General, Gedow Harakhe who later said that his password for the Integrated Financial Management Information Systems (IFMIS) system was stolen.
