NAIROBI, Kenya, Jun 5 – Talk-show host Jeff Koinange, political analyst Tony Gachoka were on Friday given the option of paying a Sh2 million fine each or face six months jail time for acting in contempt of court.

Koinange and Gachoka in March linked Jimmi Wanjigi’s company, the complainant, to the Anglo-Leasing scandal in contravention of a court order.

Wanjigi had obtained an injunction against the subject being discussed on the Jeff Koinange Live (JKL) talk-show.

The defendants’ lawyer Charles Mwongera sought to have the orders stayed pending appeal but Chief Magistrate Maisy Chesang’ ordered him to make a formal application.

Chesang’ had ordered the arrest of Koinange and Gachoka on May 14 after they failed to honour her summons to answer to the contempt of court charge.

Koinange was later taken into custody, arraigned and released on a Sh100,000 cash bail which he forfeited when Chesang’ issued a fresh warrant for his arrest after he again failed to appear before her on May 25.

His lawyers informed the court that he was away on a business trip in Nigeria.

The duo’s woes are from over as they still have the defamation suit filed by Wanjigi to deal with.

Their lawyers had argued that the Chief Magistrate’s court was attempting to usurp the powers of the High Court by handling a contempt of court complaint.
