NAIROBI, Kenya, June 8 – Two legislators from the opposition Coalition for Reform and Democracy (CORD) have claimed there is a plot to remove the Director of Public Prosecutions Keriako Tobiko from office.

The opposition MPs who made the claims did not however name those behind the move, only saying he is being targeted over decisions he has made recently in his prosecutorial work.

Suna East MP Junet Mohammed and Ruaraka MP Tom Kajwang’ say they had sufficient information over a looming petition that was being drafted to initiate the removal Tobiko from office, although they did not disclose the details.

In a strange twist of events, the vocal opposition legislators threw their weight behind Tobiko saying they will expose those behind the petition while also accusing the Jubilee administration of politicizing the war against corruption through weakening the institutions mandated by the constitution to fight corruption.

“The same way they removed the EACC Commissioners, Tobiko will go. If we are going to keep quiet as Kenyans and watch our institutions go down because we happen to be in Jubilee or we support Jubilee, then we better just throw this country to the dogs,” said Kajwang’.

Mohammed said the scheme to remove Tobiko had already been hatched since he had chosen to go against his ‘seniors’ advice over who should be charged and who should not.

They lamented that the form of selective justice being propagated was setting a dangerous precedence the fight against corruption.

“This is a choreographed scheme to remove the DPP from office; they started with the EACC commissioners now they are going for the neck of the DPP. We will not allow the independent institutions of this country to be dismantled and cannibalized for the purposes of achieving certain goals, “said Mohammed.

Kajwang’ went on to state that Kenyans were being hoodwinked to believe there was an honest and dedicated anti-graft war.

They further urged Jubilee MPs, who claim to have evidence of corruption within the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission and the Office of the DPP to forward it to the relevant agencies instead of making unsubstantiated claims.

“It is like this new onslaught against the DPP and EACC is as a result of some people not having been fixed to the liking of some Jubilee politicians,” added Junet.

The reaction comes amid several statements by Jubilee MPs following the prosecution of individuals listed in the infamous ‘list of shame’ presented to Parliament by President Uhuru Kenyatta during his State of the Nation address.

Starehe Member of Parliament Maina Kamanda has sensationally claimed that the EACC and DPP have colluded with ‘certain businessmen’ to fix their rivals threatening to name the said individuals when the national Assembly resumes Tuesday.

National Assembly Majority and minority leader Aden Duale and Jakoyo Midiwo over the weekend demanded the disbanding of EACC since its commissioners left office.

Gem MP Jakoyo Midiwo criticised the prosecution of suspended Transport CS Michael Kamau saying it was not evidence based but rather political.

So far only Kamau has been prosecuted while several others implicated in corruption scams have been cleared.

They include, Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko, Agriculture CS Felix Koskei, Energy CS Davis Chirchir and Narok Governor Samuel Ole Tunai and Siaya Senator James Orengo.
